How It Works

From New Lead
to Real Reply

1

A new lead lands

NEW LEAD · KBB2:14 AM
Priya S. · trade-in · 2019 Civic

Website, marketplace, OEM form, trade form: every connected source, every hour, including the 2 AM ones your team will never see in time.

2

The opener answers, not asks

opener.compose
their question: "best price?"
answer: $32,450 · in stock ✓
+ alternate: same trim in Silver

It reads the lead's own note and answers the actual question in message one, with live inventory attached, instead of "thanks for your interest, someone will reach out."

3

New content, every touch

D1 D3 D6 D9 price → photos →
similar unit → offer

Engagement takes 6–8 messages over two weeks, so every touch brings something new: photos, a price move, a similar unit. Persistent, never pushy, instant stop on reply.

4

They reply, hand to AI Reply

Sarah replied → AI Reply takes the thread✓ full context attached

One job, done completely. AI Engage doesn't try to sell: it gets the reply, then hands a live conversation to AI Reply with everything it learned.

The Tech Underneath

Content Wins Engagement.
Templates Don't.

Powered by the Matador AI Engine™, AI Engage reads the lead's own note (the question, the trade, the reason they reached out) pulls live inventory, and writes an answer. Every touch after that says something new. That's the difference between a lead who replies and one who ghosts.

It reads why they reached out

The lead's own note is the brief: their question, their trade, their urgency, their source. Buy, sell, or trade: understood before the first word is written, not three messages in.

It answers immediately, with inventory

"Best price?" gets the price. "Is it available?" gets the unit, plus the Silver one that just landed. Message one carries real substance from your live inventory, because answers earn replies and "thanks for your interest" doesn't.

The right content at the right time

Each touch says something new: photos, a price move, a similar unit, a value update, timed when replies actually happen. Never the same "just checking in" three times. Quiet hours enforced, full stop on reply.

One job, done completely

It doesn't negotiate, quote, or oversell: that's AI Reply's job. AI Engage is measured on one thing: real replies. Focus is why it wins the first moment of buyer intent.

Watch it think: a "buyer" who's actually selling

Configured to Your Store

Your Sources. Your Cadences.
Your First Impression.

The first message a lead gets is your store's handshake. You decide exactly how it sounds, how often it follows up, and when it stays quiet: per source, per intent.

  • Source-mapped openers: every connected lead source gets its own play, written from your content library.
  • Cadence per source: D1/D2/D3 for marketplace leads, two gentle nudges for trade-ins; whatever fits, you set it.
  • Your voice: openers signed by your team, in your tone, never a robotic template blast.
  • Guardrails built in: quiet hours, considerate timing, instant stop on reply.
  • Opener coaching: Matador tracks which openers win per source and recommends the change that lifts reply rates.
The Engagement Math

Engagement Takes 6–8 Messages.
Most Dealers Stop at Two.

The average dealership lead engagement rate sits around 45%. Not because the leads are bad, because engagement takes 6–8 touches over two weeks, and human teams run out of time, patience, and new things to say. The right content at the right time closes that gap.

what engaging a lead actually takes

Every touch brings something new: a price, photos, a similar unit, a value update, timed when replies actually happen. The right content at the right frequency is how 45% becomes 80%, and it never gets tired on message six.

"Our Contact Made % has increased. We have set more appointments due overnight to the ability to communicate with clients during non business hours. Yes, it helps to improve visibility and response times for eLeads and appointments."

"Leads coming in overnight just weren't engaging the next morning. With Matador, customers engage because it reaches out as soon as the lead is received."

The Questions Dealers Ask

Straight Answers

What exactly is AI Engage?
The agent that answers the moment a new lead lands: website form, Facebook, CarGurus, KBB, AutoAlert, any source. It has one goal: get a first response. “Hi Noubar, saw you’re interested in the 2024 Civic. What questions can I answer?”
When does it stop messaging?
The moment the customer replies. Its job is done, it turns off, and AI Reply takes over the live conversation. It also stands down instantly if one of your reps messages the lead first.
How are its messages decided?
Every lead source is assigned a sequence: the cadence (immediately, 1 hour later, 1 day later, out past 60 days) and what gets said at each step.
What’s the difference between templates and AI-powered responses?
Templates are static messages you write per step. AI-powered steps use the same cadence but generate a personalized message from plain-language instructions (“friendly, mention the trade-in”): leave them blank and Matador’s base prompt handles it. Dealers usually pilot AI-powered steps on low-engagement sources like KBB, lifting engagement from ~30% toward 40–50%.
What makes the first message personal?
Live inventory (it can recommend similar vehicles) and your CRM’s lead notes. If the notes say the customer wants availability on a specific trim, the opening text addresses exactly that instead of a generic greeting.
How many touches should go out on day one?
One or two. Our performance reviews are blunt on this: six-plus day-one touchpoints (three texts, three emails) drives people away and crowds out your team’s personal outreach.
Does it work after hours?
Yes, a common setup is a one-minute response after hours and a 5–15 minute delay during business hours so reps get first shot. Some stores limit after-hours engagement to their own website leads, since third-party shoppers may not recognize the dealership texting at 11 PM.
Does it actually lift engagement?
In shadow-mode testing, the reworked AI Engage lifted engagement about 5% (think 50% → 52.5%), and at the very top of the funnel, that’s real volume. Stores run AI-powered sequences head-to-head against their standard templates before rolling them wider.
Can I exclude certain sources or lead statuses?
Yes. Pull any source out of sequences, so you never double-text leads your BDC already works, and block statuses like “Manager Review,” “BDC no contact,” or “Appointment Set” from AI contact entirely.
What’s next for AI Engage?
A Matador best-practice default: trained on millions of leads, it will know the best message and send time per lead type, so you stop hand-building frequencies and instructions. More context (inventory, notes) and research-based engagement tactics ship continuously.
